The first iPhone is iPhone 0. It's just a technical naming scheme.

@aaa: iPhone1,1 = iPhone Original iPhone1,2 = iPhone 3G the iPhone 3G was a stepping on the iPhone1 platform. It used the same system applications processor, memory, etc. The only thing that was upgraded was the baseband electronics, hence it didn't warrant a new generation from a system design point of view.

Gah, my comment layout was screwed up, my apologies. It should read: iPhone1,1 = iPhone Original. iPhone1,2 = iPhone 3G.
