1Password has announced a new feature that ties its password management capabilities to real-world locations. Designed to streamline access to credentials like Wi-Fi passwords, alarm codes, or travel documents, this update enhances the app's utility for users on-the-go.
The feature lets users assign physical locations to items stored in their 1Password vaults. Once set, these items automatically surface in the mobile app's home tab when the user is near the designated spot. A map view is also available to set or check locations, making it simple to link a hotel safe PIN or a gym locker code to where it's needed. This idea emerged from a 1Password Hackathon and was refined through customer testing in 1Password Labs.
For iOS users, enabling the feature is optional and integrates with Apple Maps. You can add a location to any item—new or existing—by editing it in the app. When you arrive at that spot, the relevant data appears without needing to search. Privacy remains a priority: 1Password processes location checks on-device, ensuring coordinates never leave your phone, and map data loading is tightly controlled.
Business users get added oversight. Admins can configure a policy in 1Password Business to manage map usage (supporting both Apple Maps and Google Maps). By default, this is off, requiring manual coordinate entry unless activated. Employers, however, can't access or track user locations, keeping personal data secure.
Apple users already relying on 1Password can enable the feature now, while newcomers can explore it with a free 14-day trial. For more details, 1Password's support article covers setup and privacy specifics.
