xAI has released Imagine Image 2.0, a major update to its image generation and editing suite built for real creative work. The upgraded model is available now as the new Quality Mode on the web and through the Grok iOS app.
A key focus of Image 2.0 is typography and layout planning. The model can render dense, multi-part visuals while keeping small text sharp and legible, xAI says. It also preserves subjects and visual styles across multiple generations and edits, making it easier to create consistent characters and other visual assets for larger projects.
New editing tools support the iterative nature of creative work. A magic wand feature lets users modify specific regions without altering the rest of the canvas, while built-in background removal exports subjects with clean transparency. The model also supports multi-reference editing, allowing users to combine up to five input images in a single generation instead of relying on manual compositing.
The update also introduces a smart resize tool that automatically fills the frame when changing an image's aspect ratio. To streamline common tasks, xAI also introduced templates for product photography, professional headshots, photo editing, icons, and game asset creation. Each template provides a preconfigured workflow that requires only the source inputs.
According to the Arena Image Edit and Text-to-Image leaderboards, Image 2.0 ranks second globally in both image editing and text-to-image generation, behind OpenAI's GPT-Image-2 model. It is available now across xAI's consumer products, with API access coming soon.
