Apple has approved a significant update to the Spotify app for iOS for users in the United States, following a court ruling that ordered the company to allow developers more flexibility regarding external purchase links. Spotify celebrated the approval via X today, stating:
This just in: In a victory for consumers, artists, creators, and authors, Apple has approved Spotify's U.S. app update.
After nearly a decade, this will finally allow us to freely show clear pricing information and links to purchase, fostering transparency and choice for U.S. consumers. There is more work to do, but today represents a significant milestone for developers and entrepreneurs everywhere who want to build and compete on a more level playing field.
This approval comes after Spotify submitted the updated app version specifically to align with the recent federal court decision concerning Apple's App Store policies on developer communications and external links.
With Apple's green light, Spotify users in the US should soon see the changes the company previously detailed. This includes the ability to view in-app pricing for subscriptions and promotional offers. The update will also enable direct links within the app guiding users to Spotify's website to purchase or upgrade plans—like moving from Free to Premium or changing existing Premium tiers.
Practically, this update lets Spotify direct users to its own website for payment, offering alternatives to Apple's standard in-app system. Spotify highlighted this in its announcement, calling it a move toward greater "transparency and choice for U.S. consumers." Earlier, the company had also mentioned that these kinds of changes could pave the way for simpler purchases of other content, such as audiobooks, which could directly benefit creators.
