Apple will reportedly use a crease-free display solution from Samsung Display for its first foldable iPhone, with mass production slated for the second half of 2026, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In a new report, Kuo says the decision will make supplier Fine M-Tec the leading beneficiary, as it provides a key component for the display.
The analyst explains that a display metal plate, which also is referred to as an internal hinge, is the critical component for a crease-free screen. It works by controlling and distributing stress from repeated bending to keep the display from deforming. Kuo reports that Apple is adopting SDC's solution, which includes a metal plate designed and manufactured by Fine M-Tec. This aligns with earlier reports suggesting Apple was looking into advanced materials like metallic glass for its hinge.
Kuo expects Fine M-Tec to begin shipping the display metal plates in the first quarter of 2026. He projects shipments of 13 to 15 million units for that year, a figure that exceeds the final product assembly volumes to account for yield losses and repair stock. This timeline supports previous reports that Apple is still finalizing key parts of the device ahead of a late 2026 launch. Fine M-Tec is expected to secure an 80% or greater supply share.
To meet Apple's strict requirements, the manufacturing process for the metal plates will reportedly use laser drilling to create microstructures that better guide stress distribution. Kuo notes this more advanced process supports a higher average selling price of $30-35 per unit, compared to around $20 for etched plates, further reinforcing Fine M-Tec's market position.
