AI Is Reshaping Apple's Mac Chip Roadmap [Report]

Apple is reportedly reshaping its Mac silicon roadmap to prioritize artificial intelligence, bypassing high-end M6 processors in favor of a faster transition to the M7 generation.



In his latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman says the base M6 is still on track to debut in lower-end Macs later this year. However, the company will forgo the Pro, Max, and Ultra variants. This marks the first time Apple has broken from its established Mac chip release cadence since transitioning away from Intel processors.


Apple concluded the AI improvements planned for the M7 generation were significant enough to justify accelerating its development rather than completing the M6 family. The company began finalizing the M7 design just six months after taping out the M6, underscoring how aggressively it is prioritizing AI-focused silicon. The new lineup is expected to begin rolling out in the first half of 2027.

The focus on AI extends to the M7 Ultra, which is being engineered for dramatically higher AI performance. The desktop chip could support up to 1.5TB of unified memory, though final configurations will depend on component availability and pricing. Apple also plans to deploy a more powerful AI server platform based on the M5 Ultra before eventually transitioning to an M7 Ultra-based design.

In the interim, Apple is expected to rely on M5 Pro and M5 Max chips to power its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, projected to launch between late 2026 and early 2027. Work is also underway on future M8 processors, including a chip code-named Soko that is expected to transition to a 1.4-nanometer manufacturing process by 2028. The continued investment underscores how AI has become a driving force behind Apple's long-term silicon roadmap.
