LG Home Accessories Could Offer HomeKit-Exclusive NFC Setup Without Power [Leak]

LG's upcoming smart home accessories could offer a HomeKit-exclusive way to begin setup with an iPhone before the accessories are powered on, according to code leaker pdfu. The finding is based on iOS 27 code and device firmware.

With the proposed feature, tapping an iPhone against an accessory would transfer the phone's pairing identity and network credentials over NFC, storing them in the accessory's secure element. Once powered on, the device would join the Wi-Fi or Thread network, and the home hub would complete Matter setup.

Firmware for the LG lock and thermostat identifies NXP's SE051H secure element, but replaces its Matter NFC applet with a HomeKit applet. That change suggests the tap-to-set-up shortcut could be limited to Apple Home. It would not make the accessories HomeKit-only: normal Matter pairing would still be available once they are powered on.

Unpowered NFC setup is already part of Matter 1.6. Although iOS 27 supports that standard, the implementation described in LG's firmware is a separate HomeKit-over-NFC system rather than standard Matter NFC commissioning.

The finding follows reports that Apple helped develop a range of LG smart home accessories, including a doorbell, smart lock, thermostat, temperature sensor, and indoor and outdoor cameras. LG is expected to handle manufacturing and support, with the products carrying its branding. Leaked renders have already shown the lock, thermostat, and sensor.

Apple has now announced its 'Welcome home' event for Tuesday, October 13, with a smart home hub, refreshed HomePod mini, and new Apple TV expected. The LG products are not expected to reach consumers for at least a few more months.
