Apple Unveils Home Collection With Smart Cameras, a Lock, and Thermostats

Posted 1 hour ago by

Apple has introduced Apple Home Collection, a lineup of cameras, thermostats, sensors, and a smart door lock developed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. The accessories are managed entirely through the Home app, with iPhone tap-to-pair setup rather than a separate manufacturer's app or account.

NFC pairing requires an iPhone running the latest software, and additional features require a compatible home hub such as HomeView, HomePod, or Apple TV. Every accessory supports Thread, and network credentials update automatically when the home's Wi-Fi changes. Home scenes and automations can coordinate the devices with Siri, adjusting the thermostat, locking the door, or starting camera monitoring as people leave.

Cameras and Video Doorbell

LG's four-camera lineup records video at up to 2.5K and works with HomeKit Secure Video. The Video Doorbell Wired has separate front and downward-facing cameras for visitors and packages, with 2.5K video from the front and full HD from the lower camera. A built-in spotlight illuminates the doorstep, while HomeView, HomePod, and HomePod mini can sound the doorbell chime.

For coverage farther from the door, the Floodlight Cam adds two adaptive lights that switch on when motion is detected, along with low-light color night vision. The Outdoor Cam Plug-In also offers color night vision and an adjustable viewing angle.

The Indoor Cam Plug-In uses a tilting design that moves to show the room when someone checks in. When the first household member returns, it tilts back down to stop monitoring. The viewing angle can also be adjusted manually or through the Home app.

Built-in storage keeps the cameras recording during Wi-Fi outages. Live views, activity, and quick snapshots are available in the Home app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K, and HomeView. With a supported iCloud+ plan, the cameras recognize people, familiar faces, pets, vehicles, and packages and retain 10 days of event video history without a separate camera subscription.

The 50GB iCloud+ plan stores recordings for one camera, the 200GB plan for up to five, and the 2TB plan for unlimited cameras. AI video summaries and natural-language searches have separate camera limits that depend on the plan, and require setup with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, an eligible subscription, and a supported home hub running the latest software.

Smart Deadbolt Lock

LG's Smart Deadbolt Lock uses Ultra Wideband to detect an approaching user with a home key on a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch and unlock without a tap. Tap-to-unlock, a PIN pad, and a hidden physical key slot provide other ways to enter, while guest access can be shared through the Home app.

Sensors detect whether the door is open, closed, or being tampered with, including an alert if it remains open while locked. Paired with the video doorbell, the lock lets users view a visitor, speak to them, and unlock the door from the same Home app view or with Siri. It supports Matter and Aliro, with core access functions operating locally even without an internet connection.

Thermostats and Room Sensors

LG and Schneider Electric each have a new Smart Thermostat and accompanying temperature and humidity sensor. Adaptive Temperature uses on-device intelligence from iPhone to adjust heating and cooling based on whether people are home, settling down for the night, or away, without requiring a manual schedule.

The thermostats can use readings from sensors in multiple rooms, including those built into HomeView, HomePod, and HomePod mini. Both thermostats and their standalone sensors support Matter, and on-device wire detection assists installation across a range of HVAC systems.

Clean Energy Guidance can shift heating and cooling to cleaner, lower-cost periods in the contiguous U.S. for customers with a compatible utility plan. The Home app also shows usage insights and peak and off-peak rate information.

Privacy, Pricing, and Availability

Apple says Home app personal data and camera footage are end-to-end encrypted and inaccessible to Apple, LG, and Schneider Electric. Footage is processed on the customer's home hub or in Private Cloud Compute. Apple Retail will also offer paid third-party installation through ADT in the U.S. starting this fall.

The collection begins arriving in December through Apple's online store, the Apple Store app, and retail locations, with select accessories following in early 2027.

U.S. starting prices are $249.95 for LG Video Doorbell Wired, $399.95 for LG Floodlight Cam, and $299.95 for LG Outdoor Cam Plug-In. All three come in Essence Graphite and Essence Silver in the U.S., Canada, and the UK. LG Indoor Cam Plug-In costs $199.95 in Essence White in those same countries.
