Apple is developing an indoor camera that uses AI to analyze its surroundings without recording video, according to Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter.

The privacy-focused accessory is known internally as J450. A release is still expected sometime within roughly the next year, although Apple has not announced a launch date.

Earlier reporting described facial recognition and infrared sensors for the project, including automations such as turning off lights when a room is empty.

It is a separate project from the LG cameras in the Apple Home Collection. That lineup includes indoor, outdoor, floodlight, and doorbell cameras with video recording and HomeKit Secure Video support. The announced products work with the Home app and the new HomeView display. Availability of the new accessories begins in December.

Gurman also believes sales of the LG products will help Apple assess demand for a broader range of its own home accessories. He expects the company to consider that expansion if it sees a large enough business.
