Peace of Mind for the Morning After

Edgar A. Nunez has introduced The Panic Button Pharmacy Finder 1.0 for iOS, his app that locates local pharmacies that may sell emergency contraception products. If unsure whether proper protection had been used during sex, the user can simply hit The Panic Button Pharmacy Finder for a scrollable listing of the 20 nearest pharmacies, including addresses and telephone numbers. Purchasing the "morning after pill" is simplified with integrated telephone dialing and map services.

At launch the app inquires "'Panic Button' Would Like to Use your Current Location", and the user may choose "OK". The iPhone, iPod, and iPad all use WPS (Wi-Fi Positioning System), and the iPhone and iPad 3G also use GPS (Global Positioning System) in determining current location. After choosing "OK" a scrollable list of the 20 closest pharmacies appears almost immediately. Pharmacy names include local addresses. On selecting any pharmacy listed a lower half pop-up window displays buttons for Call or Show On Map. Telephone enabled iOS devices will dial the number of the pharmacy selected. All devices will provide a street level Google Maps display with a red pushpin locating the destination.

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, emergency (post-intercourse) contraception may be appropriate for a woman under the following circumstances:
* You didn't use birth control
* You were forced to have sex
* The condom broke or came off
* Your diaphragm slips out of place
* He didn't pull out in time
* You missed at least two or three active birth control pills in a row (depending on which pill brand you use)
* You were late getting your shot
* You have reason to think your regular birth control might have failed


Currently, the US has only one FDA approved emergency contraceptive which can be purchased without a prescription. The brand name is Plan B, and it works by delivering a high dose of progestin. The product is available at most pharmacies, but may not be displayed (behind the counter vs. over the counter drugs). Customers must be 17 or older to purchase the "morning after pill."

"My goal in creating The Panic Button Pharmacy Finder was to provide 'peace of mind for the morning after,'" stated developer Edgar A. Nunez. "If you never need to use it, that's great. But if you should ever need emergency contraception fast, you're prepared."
