Walmart is bringing Tap to Pay, including Apple Pay, to U.S. stores and Sam's Club locations, ending its long holdout against contactless payments. Walmart announced Friday that the rollout will begin August 24 at select Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations, with plans to reach all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026 and fuel stations by mid-2027.
Shoppers will be able to check out using eligible contactless cards, phones, or smartwatches. Customers and members can also add eligible Walmart, Sam's Club, and OnePay cards to their digital wallets, giving them another way to pay at checkout.
Tap to Pay joins existing payment options including cash, credit cards, and Walmart Pay. Walmart says the Walmart app will continue to let customers pay, view purchases and receipts, and access Walmart+ fuel savings. At Sam's Club, members can also use Scan & Go to scan and pay as they shop, skipping the traditional checkout line.
Walmart said the addition is part of a broader effort to give customers and members more choice in how they pay. The company also highlighted its financial services, including options to save, build credit, and pay over time.
Walmart has long resisted adopting contactless payments in the U.S., instead directing shoppers to its QR-code-based Walmart Pay system. Once the rollout is complete, Apple Pay will be available across Walmart's U.S. stores and Sam's Club locations.
