Amazon is expanding Prime Air drone deliveries in the U.S., with plans to reach nearly 500 cities and towns by the end of 2026. Amazon announced Wednesday that the expansion will increase its current footprint by about six times, bringing ultrafast delivery to communities with tens of millions of customers.
The service currently operates from 11 sites across seven states: Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, and Texas. Drone deliveries are launching next in the Chicago, Illinois; Syracuse, New York; Cleveland, Ohio; Atlanta, Georgia; and Boise, Idaho metro areas, with more communities to follow later this year. Each site serves an area of approximately 175 square miles, and Amazon says it has already delivered hundreds of thousands of packages by drone this year.
Apple products including iPhones, Apple AirTags, and AirPods are among the eligible items, provided they meet the service's size and weight requirements. Amazon says nearly all in-stock items weighing five pounds or less that fit in a large shoebox qualify, representing more than 60 percent of the products customers buy most often. That includes millions of groceries, electronics, cosmetics, medications, and household products. Orders can arrive in as little as 30 minutes, though most are delivered about 60 minutes after checkout.
The service is integrated into Amazon's existing shopping experience, including the app, checkout, returns, and A-to-z Guarantee. Customers can check whether drone delivery is available in their area and choose a preferred delivery point with their first order. Prime members receive free drone delivery on eligible orders of $50 or more. Orders under $50 cost Prime members $2.99, while customers without Prime pay $4.99.
Amazon also emphasized Prime Air's safety systems. The service operates under Federal Aviation Administration Part 135 certification, the same framework used for commercial air carriers. Its Detect-and-Avoid system continuously monitors surrounding airspace, while onboard cameras and sensors handle navigation, obstacle detection, and safe delivery. Amazon says the drones do not track individuals or record movements, and there is no live camera feed monitored by a person. The fully electric drones are designed to operate in light rain and a range of temperatures, with drop-off sound below that of an idling delivery truck.
"Customers already turn to Amazon for fast Same- and Next-Day Delivery, and Prime Air provides them an even speedier option when they need it, with deliveries in as fast as 30 minutes," said David Carbon, vice president of Amazon Prime Air. "We've already delivered hundreds of thousands of packages to customers by drone this year, and by the end of 2026 we plan to reach customers in nearly 500 cities and towns."
