OpenAI has added an Apple Messages plugin to the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, letting ChatGPT Work and Codex read, search, prepare, and send iMessage, SMS, and RCS conversations through Apple's Messages app. The feature is available on all plans in the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS.
According to OpenAI's release notes, the feature can read and search Messages chats on a Mac and send messages on a user's behalf through the Messages app. The accompanying plugin guide notes that it does not let users interact with ChatGPT remotely through Messages and does not work in regular ChatGPT chats. For this release, the Messages plugin is included only in the Apple silicon (arm64) build of the ChatGPT desktop app.
By default, ChatGPT sends messages only after the user approves the message and its recipients. Users can choose "Allow once" for a single send or grant "Always allow sending to this chat" to skip future send approvals for that conversation. OpenAI warns that persistent approval removes the final review before ChatGPT sends a message on the user's behalf and should be enabled only when the risk is acceptable. Users can restore per-send approval by going to Settings > Computer use, selecting Manage next to Messages, and removing the chat from Always allowed to send.
OpenAI also notes a known issue: if a task is set to Full access or otherwise disables approval prompts, Apple Messages may be unable to display the confirmation needed to send a message. Switching to "Ask for approval" or "Approve for me" is the suggested workaround. In managed workspaces, administrators can disable the Apple Messages plugin through the existing Computer Use control.
Beyond Messages, the update also brings unified pinned threads across the ChatGPT desktop app and iOS, along with read-only Codex thread snapshots. OpenAI also added Site co-editing that lets owners invite active workspace members as editors where Site collaboration is available, editable ChatGPT-hosted Site URLs where URL editing is available, and made Computer History available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK. Computer History remains off by default, requires Memories, and Business and Enterprise administrators must enable access before workspace members can opt in.
OpenAI has gradually extended ChatGPT with Apple service integrations, including the Apple Music app previously launched for searching, clipping, and saving songs.
