Apple Reportedly Downsizes Vision Team as Smart Glasses Take Priority

According to a source speaking exclusively to AppleInsider, the layoffs affected employees from Apple's VR development team, the Apple Vision Group, and similar roles. Apple has not commented on the report. While the cuts reportedly eliminate an entire VR-focused team, the broader Vision organization has not been disbanded and work on Vision Pro and future products is expected to continue.

The layoffs follow Apple's broader reorganization of the Vision Products Group, which shifted resources away from major new enclosed headsets. The company also scaled back work on future Vision Pro hardware following a disappointing response to the M5 refresh, and lost the group's hardware engineering leader to OpenAI.

Apple's next major wearable effort is expected to center on camera-equipped smart glasses. The company is targeting a WWDC 2027 unveiling for the device, which is expected to rely on Siri and Visual Intelligence rather than an AR display.
