Independent iPhone developer Alex Wiltschko today is pleased to announce the release of Octave for the iPhone and iPod touch. Octave turns the iPhone into a fast and accurate real-time analyzer using either the iPhone's built-in microphone, or any other iOS-compatible mic. With Octave, anyone can easily analyze the frequencies in the sound around them.

Octave provides a gorgeous full-screen and fast data display, showing the amplitude in all the audible frequencies around you. Quickly find the frequency of the feedback in a PA system, bet your friends you can tell what frequency an ambulance's siren is, or tune a guitar or piano with this app in your hand.

"Seeing the sound around you on the screen of your iPhone is a really fun experience," said Alex Wiltschko, the lead developer of Octave. "With just one tap, you can tell exactly how loud each musical note or frequency is around you."


Octave was written from the ground-up to be as responsive and as accurate as possible, taking full advantage of the iPhone and iPod touch hardware. "I think people will be surprised at how fast this app runs and how fluid it feels, even on older devices," Wiltschko said. "Real-time audio processing on the iPhone is hard, but I think Octave does it very well."
