I think I have it figured out. When I downloaded the firmware using Safari.. it unzipped the file and made it a folder. I used Camino, it kept the file a *.ipsw Now I'm on my way to downgrading!

I am working on a Mac. Hmmm. The file I download says iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw.zip When it finishes downloading, it unzips and becomes a folder: iPhone1,1_1 Shouldn't it stay: iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw Maybe this is the problem.

Joao... I feel like I'm getting somewhere. At least here in this directory I see the lego icons. But, the most current firmware in here is 1.1.3 Now how do I get 1.1.4 firmware into here? In the folder I downloaded, I don't have a file for 1.1.4 just the files I mentioned in the last comment. But, at least I feel closer!

dear MTN i think your problem is the correct firmware to restore, if you have a mac try this folder( System Hd/users/*your user*/library/itunes/iPhone Software Updates/iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw ) and that is the correct firmware, if you have a PC try to serch a file ended ''.ipsw''. Regards Joao F.

UGH!!! I don't get it. I am getting very frustrated. I follow all the steps. I get to the restore. Option click. Navigate to the folder. It looks nothing like the pic you have. When I download using your link for the firmware, I get a folder named: iPhone 1,1_1 In the folder are 3 dmg files, 1 Firmware folder, a kernalcache and a .plist. In the Firmware folder are 2 other folders, all_flash and dfu. What am I doing wrong? I have done steps 1 - 7 so many times. I have downloaded the firmware and reinstalled iTunes 7.5 many times. Am I missing something? I have followed every step both here and on Brooks Garrett's site. I've used two different computers. Same result. Everyone else makes this seem so easy. Please help!

I downloaded the firmware through your link. But, I cannot figure out which file to select when restoring. I option click restore in 7.5, navigate to the folder I downloaded for 1.1.4, but I have several files in the folder, what do I select?

I tried this method first, but the brooks garret worked for me twice. Didn't have to restore 2.0 in dfu mode. a regular restore worked and i skipped to step 4 both times.

thank you sooo much! i thought it didn't work until i realized i was confusing recovery mode with DFU mode. after that i got it into DFU mode on my first try. I then had to restore it again because pwnage didn't work, but after that, everything wen't smoothly. thanks again!

The iClarified instructions did not work for me. The unlock/jailbreak software hung and the phone stayed in recovery mode. Brooks Garrett's instructions worked (thanks!). I would strongly advice everyone to use those.

@Genna If it doesn't recognize the SIM card, it is not unlocked. You still need to downgrade your baseband.

Looks like it doesn't unlocked the SIM. The phone does not have signal bars. Looks like it didn't unlock the SIM-lock. Any idea on how to fix this?

@Genna, actually i know very little about computer as well... but think thr might still be sth i can help. pls try to FULLY UNINSTALL the itunes! if u r using mac, pls follow ALL the processes provided in the original post (using terminal). but remember to type TWO spaces after the 'rm' when doing the 'Library/Preferences' one!!!

@yoyo, could you help me please, or anyone for that matter. I am stuck in the 1600 error too. I know nothing about computers and got in way over my head with this tutorial. Sounds childish but I really need someone to help walk me through the process. Anyone?

Yoyo - July 14, 2008 at 7:01pm
thank u for sharing this method! but still i wanna point out a seemingly very tiny but actually extremely misleading and annoying mistake. in the iTunes uninstall process for mac, the 'rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes*' is incorrect. there should be two spaces between the 'rm' and the '~', not one! i was sucked in the struggle with the 1600s errors resulted from this mistake for hours, and finally found the clue in your screen print! but after all, thanks again to your method! i've got my iPhone back at last!

None of this worked for me so I have written a how to and you can download it here. http://www.fightingdisturbedchaos.com/iphone.txt I use a macintosh so if you use a PC.... why?

Your Link Does Not Work
If you are going to repeatedly bump yourself, at least have a working link ;-)

I can verify that the Mobile Frameworks seems to be the issue with 1604 errors. I have modified the tutorial accordingly :)
@Brooks, Thanks for your contributions. They are appreciated!

just thought id mention i never removed the mobile framework at all and i am now successfully downgraded. i just followed the step by step guide from http://www.brooksgarrett.com/hacking/downgrading-iphone-1g-20-to-114 fair enough it took me several attempts but i got there in the end. huge thanks to iclarified and brooks garrett and anyone else who's comments helped me along the way.

Before I forget, THANK YOU iClarified! You're article was the foundation of my research in writing my process. Without the initial steps here I would have never gotten this to work.

@genna, hold down both power and home button untill screen goes completely black (about 10 secs) if ur using windows u should hear an audible alert. now let go of power but continue holding home untill u hear a second sound (about another 7-10 secs). you should now be in dfu mode

How long do i hold down the home button for when getting into DFU mode? I kept holding it down while I pressed alt restore. Is the right? This time my iphone screen went white and then to the apple. I just got error (1604) so I guess I will try it again.

iClarified - July 14, 2008 at 1:12pm
@Genna, you are not in DFU mode. Please read the instructions for DFU mode carefully!
@Dirk, I am going to be going through this tutorial again tonight to try and make things a bit clearer. I'll confirm if the MobileDevice.framework is the source of everyones headaches

I keep getting and error (20). iLiberty and other programs I've tried will not even recognize the phone. Any suggestions? I don't know much about computers so any lame-man terms will be helpful.

Successfully downgraded on a Mac after several unsuccessfull attempts resulting in error 1604. The solution came from http://www.brooksgarrett.com/hacking/downgrading-iphone-1g-20-to-114, specifically when removing iTunes before re-installing 7.5, you also need to remove /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

Been tearing my hair out all weekend over this. the baseband 04.04.05_G just wouldn't go away. But then found Kiphone has been updated to erase this version and downgrade the baseband. Link here: http://iphone-freak.com/en/page1/page1.html Note: I had to do an ierase, then restart the app and run the downgrade and that finally did it! My phone is back!

@Jay :: you need to see the tutorial at hackthatphone.com and downgrade your baseband. Then you're done.
