iPhone 3GS Will Not Support iOS 5.x?

Posted May 24, 2011 at 11:38am by iClarified
Mobile-Review Editor-in-Chief Eldar Murtazin is reporting that Apple will drop support for the iPhone 3GS in iOS 5.x.

Murtazin made the following tweet earlier today.

Just one comment. Apple iPhone 3Gs wont be upgradable to iOS 5.x. iPhone 4 will.

The source of Murtazin's statement is unclear; however, considering that iOS 5.x is supposed to be a large update it makes sense for Apple to try and avoid the same problems it had with the iPhone 3G on iOS 4.x.

It also seems to suggest that iOS 5.x would a launch alongside a new device; otherwise, Apple would be left with only one device on its latest operating system.

I disagree, first and foremost given the fact that IOS 5 is supposed to if you believe rumors to launch either june/july or september time frame. Apple is still selling the 3gs from its store, and Im sure quite a few people would be angry if they are not allowed to upgrade to 5.0 if they had just purchased a new iphone. As with Iphone ios 4.0 and 3g support I am sure there will be support for 5.0 for 3gs thru a certain version, remember the 3gs is not the weak piece of crap that the 3g was!

This time Apple wins...hackers just aren't wise enough to create unlock for some iphone 4 models...so the phone has been worthless while i'm in other countries :-(

Do you really think apple wins when hackers arent able to jailbreak their device? I'm 100% sure that a huge part of internet FREE marketing done buy ordibary people refarding the iphone is totatly related to the fact of being able to jailbreak your phone. Not only to install craced apps, but to be free to do whatever you want with your device. In times where the worlds fight for librerty Apple still does not givong it to it's customers. In my opinion once the jailbreaks are bo longer possible apples market share will be defutly impacted and most people will migrate towards Android device ir even WP7.

Makes sense. It kind of almost follows the trend of Apple not supporting older iPhone models when the new phone drops.

Buy a phone, get support for a while then youre out of luck. What about people that are happy on 3gs. :D

they're not shutting down your phone, if you're happy with it now, you'll be happy without updates.

I understand they are not shutting down my phone, but I remember when I was happy on 3.1.2 but then when 4 came along some apps could not be downloaded/installed cos they only worked on ios4. This is what will happen with ios5. IMO I can't why apps can't run on all ios's and limitations should only come into play with hardware. Anyways I can see this opening up a can of worms lol :D

That's pure marketing. They want to push you to buy the Iphone 4 instead of buying a 3GS. I belive this clearly points to the launch of new iphone gadget soon. Obviously one day 3GS would lose support, but I just didn't think it would come so early. I mean, able should be able to tell you the day your support will end, just like happens to Windows (on PCs) and even to Ubuntu for example, so you know what you are buying and for how long you will have support for that. Imagine peoplo who didn't red this and go to an apple store 3 weeks before the ios 5 to launch and buy a 3GS. Ibelieve thats one of android's advantages. There you get to choose to update whenever you want no matter if your manufacturer realeses a new version of the OS especifically for your phone or not. The web is full of custom ROMs for many different Droid phones. I was always reluctant on changing to android but I think Apple needs to get a bit more real. I believe they will lose even more users to android now. Oh, and don't ever forget Nokia with WP7....

Yup I don't even know why I'm bothering reply/making my opinion, cos I know Apples game, I think most people do. I think it's due to the fact I'm going to be a dad in a couple of month and not sure if I can justify to myself the expense of the iPhone4s/5. Before I didn't really care about giving Apple or phone company my money. Don't get me wrong I love the iPhone, one of the best, if not the best. Maybe I'm just sad cos I'm not sure my wife will be happy with me buying the next. Might have to have this 3GS for another 2 years :D
