OpenPeak’s iPhone clone for homes is production ready, says Amy Mikolasy, OpenPeak's director of partner marketing, and could be in the market by the first quarter of 2009.

This information comes via a Wired report which indicates that the slick IP media phone, called OpenFrame, has been in design for about a year and a half. “We have done the end-to-end product design, from hardware to software and the device management system,” says Mikolasy.

“It is meant to replace the home phone, which has been left behind by technology,” she says.

Third party software developers will be able to create applications for the device, similar to how developers do for the iPhone. The phone will come with certain applications, such as calendar, news, weather, etc.

“One of the beauties of the product is that it is dynamic,” says Mikolasy. “It is really a blank screen of opportunity.” It could be used as a digital picture frame or even as a internet radio receiver.

Most likely the phone will be available through telecoms such as AT&T and Verizon. OpenPeak is hoping to set a price inside the $200 to $300 price range.

It would suck if the power went out and you had to dial 911 or if it broke the cost and hassel of repair... Don't get me wrong I love it but I can see so many problems with it.... "Hi Mike, hows cindy and the kids? ...hello?.... hello? ... Damit Jack this thing froze again!!" lol oh the joy of relying on technology ..better keep that rotary phone handy ;)

That is really interesting. Looks like the kind of thing that apple could do too and do really well. I have just discovered VOIP for the home phone so I am keen on products like this now.
