Apple is Snapping Up Internet Infrastructure to Deliver Massive Amounts of Data to Customers

Apple is snapping up Internet infrastructure capable of delivering massive amounts of data to customers, according to a WSJ report. The move will give the company more control over the distribution of its content and lays the groundwork for a possible move into television.

Apple's data delivery needs have increased rapidly over the past few years, mainly due to its new iCloud service that stores users' data and media in the cloud. Thus, the company has been signing long-term deals to lock up bandwidth and has been hiring more networking experts to help it gain additional control over the content it distributes.

Bill Norton, chief strategy officer for International Internet Exchange, tells the WSJ that Apple has bought enough bandwidth to move hundreds of gigabits of data each second.

Notably, Apple will need this capability if it moves further into television.

The company's need for bandwidth and supporting infrastructure will grow if it moves further into television. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook has said improving the TV viewing experience is an area of interest for the company and that it has a "great vision" for television. On a conference call last week to discuss its latest earnings with analysts, Mr. Cook said Apple is on track to break into new product categories this year, fueling speculation about a new television or revamped video service.

Twitch is a site where people can live stream themselves playing video games or whatever. Just like justin.tv, which twitch is owned by, or ustream. They're pretty cool sites actually. Check them out.
