Apple today announced 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales on launch weekend. Here's a historical look at launch sales for every iPhone released.
It's a bit surprising that Apple only sold a million more iPhone 6 units than iPhone 5s units by the end of the launch weekend given the increased excitement; however, the iPhone 6 Plus was definitely in short supply and some customers may be waiting to determine which size device is right for them.

Looks like the 'S' versions always have much bigger jumps than the non'S' versions.
I'm guessing that's mainly because Apple are more able to keep up with the demand on them.
Also, for the 4S there was a Fifteen month gap IIRC so loads of people were waiting for it.
Also note that Apple didn't release the iPhone in China so this is pretty good given that big of a market is missing.
To the person asking about Samsung I remember there was a chart and none of Samsung's phones with a month on the market could beat Apple's first weekend sales and this was Samsung's shipments vs Apple's actual sales
