Apple's Liam Robot Disassembles Your iPhone [Video]

Posted March 21, 2016 at 8:06pm by
Apple today unveiled Liam, a robot that disassembles the iPhone making it easy for the company to recycle the various components of the device.

True innovation means considering what happens to a product at every stage of its life cycle. Liam disassembles your iPhone when it’s no longer functioning, so the materials inside can live on.

Liam can take apart over 1.2 million phones a year. Check him out in the video below...

Leave it to Apple to make a brilliant mechanical robot to dis-assemble iPhones for ‘environmental reasons’ (really to efficiently re-use old and returned iPhone parts).

Example: For an iPad Air 2 with minor button issues, Apple might not offer much for a trade-in, even though they can recycle the 128GB logic board, LCD, and touchscreen to refurbish other units.

Maybe if those took care of your products, you'd still get enough fit your trade in.

Anyone notice the different camera design at the beginning of the video? It's flush, not protruding. iPhone 7?

I think it is quite wasteful to just take apart a phone that is only a little more than a year old. They can sell them to wholesalers which would resell them so they can be used again instead of throwing them away

The idea is: we have recycle bins so please throw your partly good phones at our Apple Store recycle bins and we will extract a few micrograms of silver. In the past, there have been concerns that Apple was selling refurbished iPhones that weren't clearly marked as such.

Apple might not just salvage silver; they could be using the used logic boards, LCDs, and other parts to refurbish devices or provide replacement units during repairs.

Cause if you read the apple terms you will read that: If your apple product is under warranty you may get new or probably refurbished parts. If your product is out of warranty and for example you need to pay $1000 for macbook logic board then you will for SURE get second hand "refurbished" logic board!!!!! Read the apple service agreement :) So where do they get the used parts if the robot animation let you think they just get some precious metls and trash the other...

Can't wait for disassembling iPads or anything adhesive to be taken apart without leaving pieces behind.
