Proton is out with a new AI assistant called Lumo, bringing a privacy-focused alternative to the rapidly growing field of AI chatbots. The new service is designed to protect user conversations with a no-logs policy and zero-access encryption, and is available now as an app for iPhone and iPad.
Lumo can handle tasks like summarizing documents, answering questions, and rewriting text. It's part of the same privacy-focused ecosystem as Proton Mail and Proton Drive, and similarly, it's supported by its user community rather than advertising. The company says Lumo is based on open-source language models and operates from its European datacenters.
Proton says Lumo's queries are not sent to any third parties. It also won't use user conversations to train its AI models. Any chats you save are stored with zero-access encryption, meaning only the user can decrypt and read them.
The app includes features like a "Ghost mode" for chats that are not saved, the ability to upload files for analysis, and an option to allow Lumo to search the web for more current information. For those already in the Proton ecosystem, it also integrates with Proton Drive for adding end-to-end encrypted files directly to a chat.
Lumo is free to use without an account on the web or through its new mobile apps. Users with a Proton Account can log in to save their chat history. A paid 'Lumo Plus' tier is also available for those who need unlimited queries.
