Apple in Talks to Pay Publishers for Siri AI News Access [Report]

Apple is negotiating multiyear agreements with news publishers to give Siri AI access to current news and information, according to The Wall Street Journal.



The company has approached publishers in recent months about deals that would provide content to help power Siri AI, people familiar with the matter said. Rather than paying a fixed licensing fee, Apple has proposed compensating publishers each time their content is used. The company has discussed a possible nine-figure budget for the program. Apple declined to comment.


The talks come ahead of Siri AI's rollout later this year. Unveiled at WWDC, the rebuilt assistant features a more conversational interface, personal context awareness, onscreen understanding, and a dedicated Siri app across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

The discussions also follow Apple's late-2024 experiment with AI-generated news summaries, which produced inaccurate headlines and prompted the company to disable the feature after concerns were raised by publishers.

Apple already licenses content from publishers through Apple News+, which launched in 2019. Earlier agreements with some publishers also included rights for Apple to use their content for AI training.
