Apple employees widely refer to the company's upcoming foldable iPhone as the "iPhone Ultra," says reporter Mark Gurman in a post on X. The remark adds another piece of evidence that Apple may extend its Ultra branding to the new device, though he stopped short of confirming it as the final product name.
The comment came in response to analyst Max Weinbach, who argued the Ultra name doesn't fit because Apple's existing Ultra products, including Apple Watch Ultra and M-series Ultra chips, represent the highest-end offerings in their respective lineups, while the foldable wouldn't clearly surpass the iPhone Pro in every respect. "We'll see what happens," Gurman replied, suggesting that widespread internal use of the name doesn't necessarily determine the final branding.
Most recently, iOS 27 beta 5 referenced V68, an internal identifier widely believed to correspond to Apple's foldable iPhone. While the code didn't reveal a marketing name, it added another clue about the device ahead of its expected debut.
Apple typically assigns internal codenames and identifiers to unreleased products. If employees are broadly using "iPhone Ultra," it would be an unusually consumer-facing way to refer to an unannounced device. Whether Apple ultimately adopts the name or whether it simply becomes convenient internal shorthand won't be known until the company unveils its first foldable, which is expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its September event.
