OpenAI Releases ChatGPT Desktop App for Linux in Preview

OpenAI has released a preview of its ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, bringing native support to Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora and extending ChatGPT across every major desktop operating system.

"Linux has been one of the most-requested platforms for the desktop app, and this launch extends ChatGPT and Codex across every major desktop operating system," OpenAI said in an announcement on X. The app lets users access ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex directly on supported Linux distributions.



The app is available worldwide for desktop variants of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. OpenAI is providing installable .deb and .rpm packages for both x64 and ARM64 architectures.


The release comes about a month after Anthropic introduced a Linux version of its Claude desktop app with support for Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later. OpenAI has also been consolidating its desktop experience, merging the standalone Codex app into the unified ChatGPT desktop app for macOS and Windows on July 9, 2026. The unified application combines ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and the Codex coding environment in a single workspace powered by GPT-5.6.
