The Wireless Power Consortium today announced a new, faster version of its Qi standard, dubbed Qi2 25W. The updated specification will bring 25-watt wireless charging to a range of new devices, including upcoming iPhones and, for the first time, major Android smartphones.
The new standard, officially Qi v2.2.1, delivers nearly 70% more power than the original 15W Qi2 that launched in November 2023. According to the WPC, faster charging has been a top consumer-requested feature, and Qi2 25W is the first standard to enable truly high-speed Qi Certified wireless charging.
The announcement follows a recent regulatory filing that revealed new Apple MagSafe chargers with support for the Qi 2.2 standard. While current iPhone 16 models can already reach 25W speeds with an appropriate 30WMagSafe charger, this new certification will extend that capability to a wider range of third-party accessories.
Fourteen devices, including transmitters and receivers, have already completed certification for the 25W standard, with several hundred more devices now in the queue for testing. The WPC noted the number of devices awaiting certification is "unprecedented."
"When we launched Qi2, besides the immediate improvement in charging speed and energy efficiency, we promised that one of the benefits of Qi2's magnetic power protocol was that it would serve as a stepping stone for even faster and more efficient wireless charging in the future," said Paul Struhsaker, Executive Director of the WPC.
