Facebook is developing a video app for the Apple TV and other set-top boxes, according to a new report from the WSJ.
The social network is developing a video-centric app for television set-top boxes, including Apple Inc.’s Apple TV, people familiar with the matter said, giving it a home for video content—as well as a new vehicle for video advertising.
According to the report, the app is part of Facebook's plan to become a 'video-first' company that can compete for television ad dollars.
Facebook has been marketing its live-streaming capabilities, integrating more videos into Instagram, and testing a new video ad product. It's also purportedly in discussions with media companies to license TV quality programing. That programing could be distributed through the set-top app.
