Apple is planning to switch to an in-house made Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip starting next year, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The new chip will replace parts currently supplied by Broadcom.
The chip, code-named Proxima, has been in development for several years and is now slated to go into the first products in 2025, according to people familiar with the matter. Like Apple's other in-house chips, Proxima will be produced by partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
Apple's combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip is expected to begin its rollout with new home devices scheduled for released 2025, including a new TV set-top box and HomePod mini smart speaker. The company is also aiming to bring the chip to iPhone later next year and to iPad and Mac by 2026.
Besides cost savings from bringing the component in-house, Apple will also benefit from tight integration with its new in-house 5G modem that is set to begin replacing Qualcomm's modem next year. Apple is purportedly working on an end-to-end wireless approach that is tightly integrated with its other components and is more energy efficient. Initially, its chip may not outperform the one it replaces; however, it will have Wi-Fi 6E support.
Currently, Apple accounts for roughly 20% of Broadcom's revenue and the transition is likely to negatively affect the company; however, Broadcom will still provide Apple with radio frequency filters for its modems and is working with Apple on a next-generation cloud server chip.
