Spotify has launched Running Mode, a new feature that turns playlists into personalized running sessions based on a user's workout goals, music taste, and preferred tempo. The feature is rolling out beginning today for Premium subscribers using Spotify on iPhone in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.
Users can access Running Mode from the app's Fitness Hub and choose from 25 curated presets. Sessions can be customized by workout type—including interval, steady, or pyramid runs—as well as duration, target beats per minute, and preferred music genre. Spotify then selects tracks that match the chosen tempo and adapts the soundtrack as the workout progresses. Optional English-language audio cues provide guidance and motivation without interrupting the music.
The feature builds on the personalization introduced with Prompted Playlists, according to Spotify's announcement. The company says fitness-related prompts have become one of the feature's most popular uses. Running Mode joins Spotify's growing collection of fitness features, which already includes Peloton classes and creator workout videos.
The launch comes about a month after Strava discontinued its Spotify integration, removing music controls from the fitness app's Record activity experience. Users can still listen to music through the Spotify app during workouts, but Running Mode now offers a dedicated experience for building tempo-matched running sessions within Spotify.
