Apple Unveils MacBook Pro With PROLED XDR Touchscreen and Dynamic Island

Posted 51 minutes ago by

Apple has unveiled its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, bringing tandem OLED displays and Dynamic Island to redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch models. The new notebooks feature M5 Pro or M5 Max chips in thinner, lighter enclosures, with pre-orders opening today and availability beginning November 6.

PROLED XDR Display

The new PROLED XDR display reaches up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness for both HDR and SDR content, with a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and ProMotion refresh rates ranging from 10Hz to 120Hz. Alongside P3, it supports Adobe RGB, with wider green and cyan coverage and more than 80 percent coverage of the Rec. 2020 color space.

Its display engine adjusts individual pixels for content, usage, temperature, and environmental conditions, while tracking pixel use over time to maintain image quality. Both P3 and Adobe RGB are available within a single default preset. An antireflective coating is standard, with an optional nano-texture finish etched into the cover glass to further reduce glare.

For professional workflows, Apple Pro Display Calibrator supports calibration to specific targets, alongside reference modes for photography, print, design, and cinema. New DICOM presets support nondiagnostic medical image review, research, and education, not diagnosis. Genlock can synchronize the display with a camera's capture when used with compatible third-party hardware and software.

Touch and Dynamic Island

Touch is integrated directly into the display panel rather than added as a separate layer. Users can swipe through webpages, pinch to zoom, drag slides between presentations, double-tap a window to fill the screen, or flick it into a tiled position. A redesigned hinge adds stability when touching the display, while video stabilization smooths the camera feed during calls.

Many existing apps work immediately because macOS translates touches into clicks, and updated gesture APIs let developers build more specialized controls. Dedicated Touch experiences from Microsoft, Adobe, Notion, Canva, Zoom, Blender, Maxon, Shapr3D, and Algoriddim are due later this year.

Apple Creator Studio updates arriving in November will also add touch controls. These include drawing and painting directly on the canvas in Pixelmator Pro, playing a Multi-Touch keyboard and drum pads in Logic Pro, and selecting ranges, placing clips, and zooming into edits in Final Cut Pro.

Dynamic Island provides access to Live Activities, music controls, calls, AirDrop requests, and Siri AI. Spotlight moves into Dynamic Island when Siri AI is available and enabled. Siri AI remains a beta feature in macOS 27.2, with support for English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish; availability varies by region and language.

Lighter Design and Pro Hardware

The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds, half a pound less than before, while the 16-inch model weighs 4 pounds, a reduction of 0.7 pounds. The smaller notebook is half a millimeter thinner and the larger one nearly a millimeter thinner. Slimmer borders allow the larger display to grow to 16.3 inches, while the smaller screen measures 14.2 inches.

Configurations offer up to 128GB of unified memory and, for the first time, up to 16TB of storage. M5 Pro and M5 Max include a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core, enhanced shader cores, third-generation ray tracing, and Dynamic Caching. A redesigned thermal system directs warm air away from the display.

The six-speaker system has redesigned woofers and tweeters, with Apple claiming 50 percent deeper bass. Dedicated audio tuning now supports closed-lid use with an external display. The notebooks also include Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, studio-quality microphones, and a 12MP Center Stage camera.

Connectivity includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe, a headphone jack, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. M5 Pro supports up to three external displays in addition to the built-in screen, while M5 Max supports up to four. Apple rates battery life at up to 24 hours, depending on use and configuration, with fast charging to 50 percent in 30 minutes.

These models join the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 announced yesterday. They run macOS 27 Golden Gate, with Apple Intelligence features including Safari tab organization, website-change alerts, and tools for creating Shortcuts automations from a description.

Pricing and Availability

U.S. pricing starts at $2,899 for the 14-inch model with M5 Pro and $3,399 for the 16-inch version. M5 Max configurations start at $4,499 and $4,799, respectively. Education pricing starts at $2,749 and $3,199 for M5 Pro models, or $4,199 and $4,499 for M5 Max models.

Pre-orders are available in 30 countries and regions, including the U.S., starting October 28. Deliveries and availability at Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Resellers begin Friday, November 6.
