A U.S. trademark application for the term "HOMEOS" has surfaced, fueling speculation about a new operating system from Apple for its smart home devices. The filing, discovered by Parker Ortolani, was submitted just weeks ago and hints at a new software platform that could be unveiled at the company's upcoming developer conference.
The April 16, 2025, application comes from Home Operations Suite LLC, which appears to be a shell company of the sort Apple typically uses to keep new product names under wraps. The filing also points back to an earlier application made in Liechtenstein in October 2024. That's a common strategy used to keep trademark registrations under the radar.
The trademark covers two international classes. Class 009 includes "Downloadable computer software, application development software; computer software for use as an application programming interface for building software applications." Class 042 covers a wide range of software services, including design, development, maintenance, and technical support. These classifications strongly suggest "HOMEOS" is intended for a new operating system.
This filing lands right in the middle of ongoing rumors about Apple's smart home plans. The company has been working on a smart home hub with a screen, though its release is reportedly on hold because of Siri's development issues. There's also talk of a more ambitious AI tabletop robot with an expressive arm. A dedicated 'homeOS' would be the logical software to tie these future home devices together.
