Apple is working to improve power efficiency in a future iPhone, with a new report from The Elec suggesting the company is exploring a more advanced display technology for a model launching as early as 2027.
The change centers on Apple's Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) OLED panels, which are currently used to enable ProMotion's variable refresh rates while saving power. The new version would apply power-sipping oxide materials to the display's driving transistor which currently relies on less efficient LTPS technology. According to the report, this would further reduce the screen's power consumption.
The report singles out the 2027 iPhone "Air" as the prime candidate for this upgrade, a model whose ultra-thin design would make battery life a major focus. This more advanced panel could come at a cost, however, potentially leading to a higher price for that model.
Apple has already used a similar 'LTPO3' display in its Apple Watch Series 10. According to the report, a decision on bringing the technology to the iPhone is expected in the third quarter of this year, with Samsung Display and LG Display positioned as the likely suppliers.
This potential display upgrade aligns with other rumors pointing to a major overhaul for the 20th-anniversary iPhone in 2027, which is also said to feature a bezel-free design and new battery chemistry.
