A new rumor claims to offer an early look at the cases for Apple's upcoming iPhone 17, suggesting the company is preparing a new synthetic fabric to replace its short-lived and much-criticized FineWoven material. The report, from leaker Majin Bu on X, also points to the return of an integrated lanyard loop for silicone cases.
According to the post, the new synthetic fabric has a more technical feel than its predecessor, with a visible textile texture and a grippy, rubber-like finish. It will reportedly be available in several matte colors, including green, orange, blue, and purple. The material is said to be more resistant to scratches and daily wear, which would address the durability complaints that dogged FineWoven—a material Apple reportedly stopped producing earlier this year.
The rumor also suggests that silicone cases for the iPhone 17 will get an integrated lanyard loop, taking a cue from the design of the AirPods Pro 2 charging case. This would allow users to more easily secure their device to a wrist strap or bag. Accessory manufacturers have reportedly already updated their molds to accommodate the new feature.
Finally, the report suggests Apple may introduce cases with a translucent, glassy look that matches the new Liquid Glass aesthetic unveiled for iOS 26. These versions would offer a more striking design for users looking for an alternative to the new fabric.
