Apple has officially released tvOS 26, the latest major software update for Apple TV. First previewed at WWDC in June, the update brings a refreshed interface, upgrades to core apps like Apple Music and FaceTime, and new personalization features.
At the heart of the redesign is 'Liquid Glass,' a real-time effect that reflects and refracts its surroundings. You'll see it throughout the interface, including in system controls like fast-forward and rewind, where it keeps video content in focus while adding depth to the UI.
The Apple TV app has been overhauled with the new look and now features cinematic poster art. Profiles can appear automatically when Apple TV wakes, making it faster to get started for households with multiple users. Developers also gain a new API to link app logins with a user's Apple Account, cutting down on sign-in friction.
Apple Music Sing gets a big update: you can now use an iPhone as a handheld microphone, with your voice amplified through the TV. The feature — supported on iPhone 11 or later and third-generation Apple TV 4K — also adds Lyrics Translation and Pronunciation to broaden support across more songs.
FaceTime adds support for Contact Posters, while Live Captions expand to more languages including French, German, and Japanese. Notifications for incoming calls are now tied to the active profile, and calls can be answered on a HomePod or nearby iPhone.
Other improvements include new Aerial screen savers with user-selectable categories, and the option to set any AirPlay-enabled speaker as the permanent audio output.
