iFixit has published its teardown of the new iPhone Air, offering our first look at the engineering secrets behind Apple's thinnest smartphone. The video details a completely re-engineered internal layout, a custom 3D-printed component, and a few surprises about its repairability and battery.
The teardown confirms that despite its 5.6mm profile, the iPhone Air can be opened from the back, allowing for battery replacements without removing the screen. Inside, the architecture has been reconfigured, with the logic board moved to the top "plateau" area alongside the camera, freeing up space in the main body.
The battery is a 12.26 Wh cell, the same one found inside Apple's new MagSafe Battery Pack for iPhone Air. The teardown notes the use of electrically releasing adhesive, which makes removal cleaner than traditional methods.
iFixit also addressed durability, showing that while the bare titanium frame can be broken at its plastic antenna lines, the logic board is no longer located in this vulnerable area. The disassembly also confirmed Apple's claim of using a 3D-printed titanium housing for the USB-C port, a process also used on the new Apple Watch Ultra 3.
Other internal details include a complex camera removal process that is made clearer by Apple's day-one repair guides. The logic board disassembly also revealed Apple's new in-house chips, including the A19 Pro, the second-generation C1X modem, and the new N1 wireless chip.
