Apple has expanded its Tap to Pay on iPhone feature to five more countries across Europe. The list of new regions includes Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Monaco, and Norway. This expansion allows merchants in these countries to accept in-person contactless payments directly on an iPhone, without needing any extra hardware.
The feature, which Apple first announced in 2022, enables businesses of all sizes to take payments from contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets. Merchants can get started using an iPhone Xs or later running the latest version of iOS and a partner-enabled app. During checkout, the customer simply holds their card or device near the merchant's iPhone, and the payment is completed securely using NFC technology.
Apple is launching the service with several payment platforms in the new regions. In Estonia and Lithuania, the service is available through SumUp and Revolut, while SumUp is the launch partner in Latvia. Adyen and BNP Paribas will support the feature in Monaco. In Norway, launch partners include Adyen, Nexi, PayPal, Stripe, SumUp, Surfboard Payments, and Viva.com.
The service works with contactless cards from major networks including American Express, Mastercard, and Visa. In Norway, it will also support BankAxept through Surfboard Payments.
Apple emphasizes that customer payment data is protected by the same technology that makes Apple Pay private and secure. All transactions are encrypted and processed using the Secure Element, and Apple does not know what is being purchased or who is buying it. With this latest expansion, Tap to Pay on iPhone is now available in 43 countries and regions around the world.
