Check out this video comparing the speaker volume of the new iPhone 17, the ultra-thin iPhone Air, and the flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Our testing showed the standard iPhone 17 was the loudest of the three when measured from the bottom, registering a peak volume of 103.8 dBA. The iPhone 17 Pro Max came in a close second at 102.0 dBA, while the iPhone Air was significantly quieter at 85.0 dBA.
When measured from the side, the results were much closer between the base model and the Pro Max. The iPhone 17 measured 93.4 dBA, just slightly louder than the iPhone 17 Pro Max at 93.0 dBA. The iPhone Air again measured the quietest at 86.9 dBA. The lower volume from the iPhone Air is likely a result of its ultra-thin design, which offers less internal space for the speaker assembly. Conversely, a recent teardown of the iPhone 17 Pro revealed a substantially larger earpiece speaker, which could contribute to its strong performance from the side.
