Shure has officially resurrected one of its most popular mobile microphones, updating the classic MV88 form factor with modern connectivity for the latest generation of Apple devices. Announced today ahead of CES 2026, the new MV88 USB-C Stereo Microphone ditches the Lightning connector of its predecessor for a direct USB-C plug, instantly restoring native compatibility with the iPhone 17, iPad Pro, and Mac.
For years, the original MV88 was a staple for mobile journalists and content creators due to its pocketable size and adjustable hinge. However, Apple's transition to USB-C ports on the iPhone 15 and later models left the accessory requiring dongles or forced users toward the larger, cable-based MV88+ Video Kit. This update brings back the compact, cable-free design that made the original a bestseller, plugging directly into the bottom of the device to create a unified, handheld recording rig. Shure notes that the connector is extended to provide a secure fit with phone cases up to 2.1mm thick, minimizing the need to remove protection before recording.
The microphone is engineered for creators who need professional audio quality without the bulk of a traditional field recorder. To streamline the workflow, the hardware includes an Auto Level Mode that intelligently adjusts gain in real-time to prevent clipping or quiet audio. It also features a Real-time Denoiser designed to cut down on low-frequency background noise—a crucial addition for vloggers working in busy environments or trade show floors.
Inside, the device packs two capsules capable of four selectable polar patterns: stereo (adjustable from 60° to 135°), mono cardioid, mono bi-directional, and raw mid-side. This versatility allows users to configure the mic for distinct scenarios, such as narrowing the field for a one-on-one interview or widening it to capture a live musical performance.
While the microphone operates as a plug-and-play device with five quick-start presets (Speech, Singing, Flat, Acoustic, Loud), it pairs with the Shure MOTIV apps on iOS and the desktop MOTIV Mix software for granular control. Users can access a five-band EQ, a high-pass filter, a limiter, and a compressor to fine-tune the audio profile. This launch complements other recent creator-focused hardware, such as the DJI Osmo Mobile 8, as the ecosystem of professional mobile production tools continues to mature around USB-C.
The Shure MV88 USB-C Stereo Microphone is available to order today for $159. It ships with a foam windscreen and a protective carry case.
