DJI has unveiled the Osmo Mobile 8, its latest smartphone gimbal, which adds significant new hardware features and deeper integration with the iPhone through Apple's DockKit. The new model brings 360-degree horizontal rotation, an integrated extension rod and tripod, and an included Multifunctional Module that adds a fill light and a DJI Mic receiver.
A major update for iPhone users is the gimbal's support for Apple DockKit, allowing for intelligent subject tracking directly within the native Camera app and more than 200 other compatible iOS applications. The direct phone connection is initiated by tapping the phone to an NFC area on the gimbal handle.
The Osmo Mobile 8 also introduces two other tracking methods. The magnetically attached Multifunctional Module enables tracking for cats and dogs in third-party and livestreaming apps. For DJI's own software, the Mimo app for iOS and Android uses ActiveTrack 7.0, which can track people, pets, or objects, and uses a Dual Lens Boost feature to combine a phone's wide-angle and telephoto lenses to ensure subjects are not lost.
The included Multifunctional Module also features a built-in fill light with eight levels of adjustable brightness and color temperature. It houses a microphone receiver compatible with DJI's Mic 3, Mic 2, and Mic Mini transmitters, and supports hand gestures to start and stop recording or activate tracking.
For the first time in the series, the gimbal's pan axis supports 360-degree horizontal rotation for capturing panoramic shots. DJI has also added a new grip designed for low-angle shooting and built an extension rod and tripod directly into the handle. The gimbal weighs 370g, offers up to 10 hours of battery life, and can charge a connected phone.
