Apple is exploring a new hardware category with a wearable AI device intended to capture the world around you. The project, which is still in the early phases of development, describes a magnetic accessory equipped with cameras and microphones that would function as a visual extension of the company's AI efforts.
According to a report from The Information, the device is being designed as a circular disc roughly the size of an AirTag, though slightly thicker to house the necessary components. The current prototype features an aluminum and glass housing with a magnetic backing that allows it to clip onto clothing.
The hardware is said to include a dual-camera system, likely pairing a standard lens with a wide-angle option, alongside a three-microphone array and a built-in speaker. It reportedly includes a physical button on the edge for input and uses a magnetic inductive charging interface similar to the puck used for the Apple Watch.
Apple is reportedly pushing to have the device ready as early as 2027, a timeline that would pit it against a similar project being built by OpenAI and former Apple design chief Jony Ive. The category has had a rough start, however, with the Humane AI Pin, created by former Apple employees, failing to gain traction due to performance issues.
Such a device would likely rely on the major software overhauls Apple is currently preparing. The news lands just as reports surface that Apple plans to rebuild Siri into a proper chatbot for iOS 27. The company also recently confirmed a partnership to use Google's Gemini models for its next-generation assistant, providing the kind of backend intelligence a screenless wearable would need to be useful.
Sources cautioned that the project hasn't been finalized and could still be scrapped if it doesn't meet Apple's standards.
