AirTag 2 Teardown Reveals Thinner Design and Harder-to-Remove Speaker [Video]

A teardown of Apple's second-generation AirTag has surfaced online, offering an early look at the device's internal design. In a video shared by Joseph Taylor, the updated tracker appears largely unchanged inside and does not include any new hardware-based anti-tamper features that would disable it if the speaker is removed.
The disassembly shows that AirTag 2 is held together with adhesive much like the original model, though it takes more effort to open this time around. Apple appears to have increased the use of glue. Inside, the most noticeable change is a thinner logic board. That could make it easier for modders to design slimmer custom housings. The speaker coil is slightly larger than before, which lines up with Apple's claims of a louder speaker.
The video also shows that the speaker magnet can still be removed without breaking the device, though it is more firmly secured than in the first-generation model. Once pried out, audio is disabled. After the modification, the AirTag powered up and appeared on the map when paired with an iPhone, indicating that removing the speaker does not trigger any software blocks or disable tracking. For users who modify AirTags for specific uses, such as bikes or wallets, that distinction matters. At the same time, removing the speaker eliminates an important anti-stalking safety feature.
From the outside, AirTag 2 looks nearly identical to the original. The engraved text on the back has been updated, now appearing in all capital letters with revised markings, and a new QR code appears inside the battery compartment. Apple has also refreshed the packaging, switching to a slightly narrower box and replacing plastic pull tabs with paper.
