I was typing on my iPad and the keyboard suddenly separated into two halves on either side of the screen. I cannot figure out how to join them back together into a single keyboard.

You can merge a split keyboard on iPadOS by using the keyboard button/icon or a pinch gesture.
1. Tap and hold the keyboard icon located at the bottom right corner of the keyboard.
2. Slide your finger up to select Merge or Dock and Merge from the menu that appears.
3. Release your finger to snap the keyboard back together.
Alternatively, place one finger on each half of the split keyboard and drag them together toward the center of the screen to merge them.
To prevent this from happening in the future, navigate to Settings > General > Keyboard and toggle the Split Keyboard switch to the OFF position.
