Since the first-generation iPad does not support iOS 6 or later, what is the best way to update it to the final supported version, iOS 5.1.1, and keep the device functional?

To update your iPad 1 to iOS 5.1.1, go to Settings, then General, and select Software Update. Alternatively, connect your iPad to a computer with iTunes or Finder, select your device, and click Check for Update. Because the iPad 1 is hardware-limited to iOS 5.1.1, it will not offer iOS 6 or later as an option. To keep the device useful, you can often install older versions of apps by navigating to your Purchased list in the App Store. If a compatible version exists for your device, Apple will prompt you to download it.

The first-generation iPad does not support iOS 6, so iOS 5.1.1 is the final firmware version available. To update your device, connect it to iTunes or Finder on a computer and click Check for Update. It will automatically identify and install the last supported software for your hardware.
