I want to update the firmware on my iPhone 3GS, which is currently running iOS 4.1. The phone uses ultrasn0w for its unlock and has the 06.15.00 iPad baseband. However, the power button is broken. I need to know if I can build an IPSW using redsn0w that will preserve my baseband and put the device into DFU mode so I can perform the update. Does anyone have suggestions on how to achieve this?

You can update an iPhone with a broken power button by using redsn0w to create a DFU IPSW. Open redsn0w, go to Extras, then Even More, and select DFU IPSW. Select your current IPSW file, and redsn0w will create a new version of it. Restore this new file via iTunes. The process may end with an error (like Error 21), but your device will now be in DFU mode. From there, you can use redsn0w again to create a custom IPSW of the firmware you want to upgrade to, making sure to select the option to preserve the baseband. Restore that custom firmware in iTunes to complete the update while keeping your unlockable baseband.

You can do this by using redsn0w to create a DFU IPSW for your current version. After that, create a custom IPSW with no baseband update using redsn0w. Restore the DFU IPSW in iTunes; it may give you an error like 21, but your iPhone will be in DFU mode. Now you can restore to the custom version of iOS with no baseband update to preserve your unlock.
