Apple Delays Smart Home Display Launch Until Fall Amid Siri AI Issues [Report]

Apple is pushing back the launch of its smart home display until later this year. While the hardware has been finished for months, ongoing delays with the company's redesigned Siri assistant have shifted the release into the fall.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the device, internally codenamed J490, had been planned for a spring debut. However, Apple is still working to complete the software that powers the device. The display relies heavily on a revamped Siri interface that forms the core of its user experience. Recent internal performance snags have delayed the rollout of these artificial intelligence features beyond iOS 26.4 and into later releases, directly affecting the timeline for the home hardware.

The device itself is described as a 7-inch square screen reminiscent of an iPad. It features a silver aluminum casing and a single USB-C port for power. Users will be able to mount the screen on a half-domed speaker base or use a wall attachment. The software interface takes cues from watchOS, organizing circular app icons in a familiar grid layout. Apple had originally planned to run the display on a version of tvOS 26, but the delay means it will now likely launch with a variation of tvOS 27.

A standout feature of the new hub is its facial recognition system. The display will recognize users as they approach, automatically switching the on-screen content to show personalized data. This includes tailored calendar appointments, notes, reminders, and customized news and music preferences. Tying this functionality to Siri's upgraded ability to access personal data is a primary reason the hardware launch depends so heavily on the software being fully baked.

The 7-inch hub represents just the first piece of Apple's expanding smart home and AI strategy. The company is also working on a more ambitious 9-inch display attached to a robotic arm slated for 2027, alongside a small home security sensor, an updated Apple TV, and a new display-free HomePod. Other wearable AI devices, such as smart glasses and camera-equipped AirPods, remain on the roadmap and are not expected to be affected by the current Siri delays.

While Apple has spent the past week overhauling its core product lines with the introduction of the iPhone 17e, a low-cost MacBook Neo, and updated external monitors, updates regarding its smart home ambitions have remained absent. The company is now targeting September to align the home hub's debut with the iPhone 18 Pro and the finalized AI software.
