Apple has acquired MotionVFX, a developer known for creating some of the most widely used visual effects plugins for Final Cut Pro and Apple Motion.
The plugin maker announced the transition today, saying its team is joining Apple to continue building tools for video editors and creators. For over 15 years, MotionVFX has built a reputation for designing high-end tracking and visual effects software tailored specifically for macOS.
"We are extremely excited to share that MotionVFX is joining the Apple team to continue to empower creators and editors to do their best work," the company said in its announcement.
The studio is best known for bringing advanced tracking tools directly into Apple's editing software. Plugins like mTracker 3D and mTracker Surface introduced camera and planar tracking capabilities to Final Cut Pro, allowing editors to composite 3D elements, text, and graphics into moving footage without exporting timelines to standalone compositing apps. The company also created the CineStudio platform and popular effects packages like mFlare.
In a brief statement, MotionVFX highlighted a shared focus on quality, ease of use, and design as key reasons for the move. The acquisition follows Apple's recent expansion of its professional creative software. Apple recently overhauled its video and audio applications with the launch of the Apple Creator Studio subscription, which bundles Final Cut Pro and Motion alongside new AI-driven editing tools.
MotionVFX thanked its customers for their support, noting that user feedback helped shape the company's current product lineup. Neither Apple nor MotionVFX has disclosed the financial terms of the acquisition or how the transition will affect the sale and support of existing plugins.
