Apple is actively advancing development on the second-generation iPhone Air, targeting a spring 2027 release window with upgrades aimed at addressing the original model's most prominent compromises.
The device, internally codenamed V62, has reached advanced testing within Cupertino, according to Bloomberg. The most notable hardware change is the addition of a second rear camera for ultrawide photography. Bloomberg reports that the limited capabilities of the current single-lens camera have generated the most customer complaints about the existing model, making the camera system one of Apple's primary areas of focus for the refresh.
Engineers are also working to improve battery life. Due to the tight physical constraints of the ultra-thin chassis, it remains unclear whether Apple will manage to fit a physically larger battery or if the gains will come entirely from improved efficiency. The updated Air will be powered by a version of the A20 Pro chip, the same silicon slated for Apple's premium devices launching later this year. This aligns with earlier supply chain reports indicating Apple was exploring advanced battery and display technologies for future ultra-thin devices.
If Apple sticks to its current plans, roughly a year and a half would pass between the first and second generations. This shift reflects a fundamental change in how Apple structures its smartphone release calendar. Instead of clustering every new handset into a single September keynote, the company is staggering its portfolio. The upcoming fall lineup is expected to consist solely of higher-end hardware, specifically the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple's first foldable smartphone.
The standard iPhone 18 has been pushed to the spring window, where it will debut alongside the refreshed iPhone Air. While the existing $999 Air is performing better than past form factor experiments such as the iPhone mini and iPhone Plus, it has not emerged as one of Apple's highest-volume sellers. Despite that, Apple still sees value in the device as a distinctive option for customers who want a highly portable iPhone with an eye-catching design. Incoming CEO John Ternus has said the Air helps differentiate Apple's lineup.
Spreading out hardware introductions allows Apple to generate more consistent revenue throughout the year while better countering competitors like Samsung, which routinely launches flagship devices across multiple seasons. The revised schedule also sets up a busy fall 2027 launch season, which is expected to include two versions of Apple's 20th-anniversary iPhone alongside a second-generation foldable model. Earlier reporting has indicated the anniversary iPhone could feature a curved screen that wraps around the device's edges.
