Weak sales of the iPhone Air are reportedly pushing competing smartphone makers to rethink ultra-thin flagship plans, potentially leaving Apple's iPhone Air 2 as the only major device in the category next generation.
The details come from Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station, who claims the iPhone Air only managed to surpass 700,000 activations after multiple rounds of price cuts. An ultra-thin handset from a domestic Chinese brand is said to have performed even worse, reaching just 50,000 activations. According to the leaker, that company had planned a follow-up with a similar small-screen, ultra-thin, high-spec approach, but the project is now in doubt and may be canceled.
Based on that outlook, the leaker says the iPhone Air 2 could end up as the only major device pursuing that ultra-thin design in the next generation.
Apple was forced to slash production of the original Air shortly after launch. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously reported that suppliers were asked to significantly reduce capacity following weak demand, reinforcing concerns about the device's commercial performance.
Despite that, Apple does not appear ready to walk away from the concept. Recent supply chain chatter suggests Apple is still developing the iPhone Air 2, though it may arrive later than originally expected. The device is now rumored for a 2027 launch as Apple adjusts its release schedule to prioritize upcoming Pro models and its first foldable iPhone.
The next version is expected to address several shortcomings seen in the original. Apple is reportedly working on new OLED technology that would help reduce display thickness while improving efficiency. Other rumored changes include the addition of a second rear camera, better thermal management, and a larger battery.
