Apple is already preparing a major upgrade for the curved screen technology expected to debut in its 20th-anniversary iPhone. The company has reportedly begun discussions with South Korean panel makers about using a new transparent electrode material designed to reduce image distortion and brightness loss along heavily curved edges.

Apple Developing Improved Curved Edge Display Technology for Future iPhones [Report]

Apple is expected to introduce a micro-curved panel design for the 20th-anniversary iPhone in 2027 as part of its push toward an almost bezel-free display. The design bends the OLED panel on all four sides, but that approach creates technical challenges around the edges of the screen. Current smartphone OLED panels typically use a magnesium-silver alloy for the cathode layer, and ETNews reports that this can lead to image distortion and reduced brightness in tightly curved areas.

According to supply chain information, Apple plans to address those issues in its 2028 iPhone lineup by replacing the magnesium-silver alloy cathode with Indium Zinc Oxide (IZO), creating a transparent electrode structure. Smartphone OLED panels commonly use a front-emitting design where light must pass through the cathode layer before reaching the user. Increasing the transparency of that layer could help minimize distortion and brightness degradation near the edges of the panel.

The transition would require significant manufacturing changes, and Apple's suppliers are already preparing new infrastructure. The report says low-damage Transparent Conductive Oxide (TCO) sputtering equipment is needed to build the new IZO cathode structure. LG Display's recently announced 1.1 trillion won OLED infrastructure investment is believed to be tied to development and future mass production of the panels.

Samsung Display is also said to be evaluating new equipment installations, though integrating TCO sputtering systems into existing smartphone OLED production lines may prove difficult because of space and design limitations. Industry observers expect Samsung to eventually invest in new production lines to support the effort.
