Apple is reportedly looking to Samsung Display for a custom OLED screen that ditches the traditional polarizer layer and introduces slightly curved edges on all four sides.

Apple Developing 'Micro-Curved' Pol-Less Display for 20th Anniversary iPhone [Rumor]

The latest supply chain details come from leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo. According to the post, Apple is requesting a "Pol-less" screen structure. The design also calls for a "micro-curved" quad-edge format. The curvature is kept purposefully shallow to avoid the aggressive waterfall edges seen on some older Android smartphones.

A Pol-less screen removes the standard polarizing film from the display stack, a technique often called Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE). We previously covered reports that Apple was evaluating CoE technology to reduce power consumption and help slim down future handset profiles. OLED panels typically rely on a polarizer to block external reflections, but that layer adds physical thickness and reduces light output. By placing the color filter directly onto the encapsulation layer, more light passes through, boosting brightness while reducing power consumption.

Removing the polarizer does make reflections harder to manage. Apple has already added a new anti-reflective coating to its recent iPhones, and that treatment is expected to improve further to compensate for the missing layer. Supply chain sources also point to a crater-shaped light diffusion layer inside the display to help maintain uniform brightness across the panel.

The move to a micro-curved panel aligns with ongoing rumors of a major redesign for the device's 20th anniversary. Apple has been actively working toward an all-screen iPhone for a 2027 release. Prototype designs are said to use a quad-curved panel to create a more seamless, borderless look. A subtle curve on all four sides could also improve edge gestures while softening the device's feel without distorting content near the edges.

To pull off a true all-glass front, Apple still has to figure out what to do with the front-facing camera and Face ID sensors. While some display analysts doubt that under-display Face ID will be ready in time for 2027, other leaks suggest Apple is still testing the technology. If Apple cannot move the entire sensor array under the display, the anniversary model could pair under-display Face ID with a small hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera.

Samsung Display is already preparing to implement similar technology. The supplier is expected to debut CoE on its own Galaxy S26 Ultra next year, giving it time to refine production ahead of supplying the high-volume panels required for Apple's 2027 milestone release.
